Habakkuk

The book of Habakkuk begins with the prophet questioning God about the prevalence of violence and injustice, and why the wicked seem to prosper while the righteous suffer. God responds by revealing His plan to use the Chaldeans to punish the wicked, which Habakkuk struggles to understand. God then instructs Habakkuk to write down a vision that will be fulfilled in the future, warning of punishment for the proud and greedy, and condemning idolatry. The book concludes with Habakkuk describing God's power and glory, and resolving to trust in God's strength despite the coming trouble and potential famine.

Chapter 1
Habakkuk cries out to God, questioning why He allows violence and injustice to prevail, and why the wicked seem to prosper while the righteous suffer. God responds that He will raise up the Chaldeans, a powerful and ruthless nation, to punish the wicked and bring judgment. Habakkuk is shocked and questions how a holy God can use such an evil nation to accomplish His purposes, and wonders why God seems to allow the wicked to devour the righteous.
Chapter 2
The prophet Habakkuk waits for God's response to his concerns, and God instructs him to write down the vision clearly so that it can be easily read and understood. The vision is for a future time, but it will certainly come to pass, and the righteous will live by their faith. The passage then condemns the proud and greedy, who exploit and oppress others, and warns that they will ultimately be punished for their actions. The chapter also denounces idolatry and the worship of false gods, and concludes by affirming that God is present in His holy temple, deserving of reverence and silence from all the earth.
Chapter 3
The prophet Habakkuk describes God's power and glory, recalling how He came from Teman and Paran, covering the heavens with His glory and filling the earth with praise. Habakkuk then describes God's judgment on the nations, His power over nature, and His salvation of His people. Despite the coming trouble and potential famine, Habakkuk resolves to rejoice in the Lord and trust in His strength.
